I too have enjoyed this discussion!!! And I too have found a sugar and wheat free diet to be helpful. I did try turmeric capsules awhile back and it upset my tummy. I like QBC tabs by Solaray: Quercitin, Bromelain and Vit C. I also like Alo Glow aloe drink. I’m looking for some good anti inflammation teas. sometimes I use stomach ease tea by Yogi which has a little ginger in it. I should probably just buy ginger tea. Anyone drink this?
Casey…good for you for going back to school to get a graduate degree and especially in such a wonderful and important field!
Hi, so how many capsules would you take daily and for how long to notice results? I've totally changed my diet over the past year. cutting out inflammatory foods and eating tons of veggies and fruits, more fish chicken less meat but I'm not 100%. I'm unable to take NSAIDS for inflammation due to kidney damage from the lupus. I was surprised that the inflammation scored "high" on my blood work. I need to find a naturopath and nutritionist and/or dietician.

Hi EnjoyLife,
My rheu told me to get tumeric and fill capsules from the health food story for inflammation. Dr. Oz recommends an iced tea made with tumeric and powdered ginger for the same purpose. I have not done either bu would like to know if anyone has.
What is strange is that since the SS i have not had any colds or allergies or sinusitis. I used to have these all the time. In fact, I said to my PCP that I do not get anything that is "normal".
I am headed for yoga. Evidently there are some poses that address the lymphatic system.
Talk to you soon.

Hi Casey, why cut out honey, eggs and nuts? Thanks.

Casey! You are a beautiful inspiration. What you write is wise and most importantly you are living it. I agree to all especially our deeper connection to what is within. The only way to peace is through that connection, and living with an illness it keeps your heart open to the joy that life is.
I am feeling a surge of energy from reading your posts yesterday, which proves that the mind too can be an obstacle in our daily motivation.
Positive Feedback : I have a very sensitive tummy which must be as a result of SS so before I take any tabs etc I prepare my tummy for it and will eat something beforehand to assist it. Yesterday I had half a teaspoon Turmeric with a table spoon of chickpea hummus. I love hummus and the turmeric was tasteless with it. Quite delish! Success! :))

Casey said:Hi Sick&Tired, if you don't mind me saying...it's not unusual to experience an upset stomach at first. Maybe the dose you started at was the full dose? If you did, try one capsule a day of the turmeric for 2 weeks and then two capsules, up to three daily. I've had that issue with several supplements and worked my way up. Now I don't have tummy issues when I take them. This was info provided by my doc and I was delighted that it worked!
Kate, sooooo happy to hear your motivation...just hoping and praying that you feel better ASAP! I'm actually doing a cleanse right now and just cutting out honey, eggs and nuts has made a difference. The usual fatigue has eased up as has the pain I often feel in my arms.
Kim, I hope you love the book! If you or anyone else has any questions, please let me know!
Oh, I also wanted to say that what is in our minds is VERY important! Prayer and meditation (especially mindfulness and heart-math) have been a huge part of getting me through bad days. My acupuncturist also has me doing qi gong (it's the mother to tai chi and feels so good). Everything I read of people healing from "uncurable" diseases states that they believed they would find a way to cure themselves. So although there are days where it is hard to believe that, we just can't stop.
Hi Maria,
I started with two a day and then worked my way up to three. I posted a link to the brand my integrative MD has me on earlier in this discussion. Integrative MDs aren't covered by insurance, but they'll spend more time with you and they want to heal through natural ways (like supplements...which sounds like that would be good for you since you are unable to take NSAIDS).

Hi again Maria! So the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is the Paleo diet for people with autoimmune disease. The intent is to eliminate any foods that can trigger and inflammatory response. Sugar is a major player in inflammation so cutting out sugar is a very good idea for those of us with autoimmune disease. I had cut out all sugar with the exception of fruits and honey. I am doing a cleanse/elimination diet for 30-40 days and they will slowly reintroduce only a few foods back in (like honey, nuts and eggs) to see if they trigger or exacerbate my symptoms. As you are aware, autoimmune disease is different for every person, so just because I may be able to handle one food, doesn't mean another person can...and vice versa. With regards to nuts and honey, both are common allergens. Maybe you're thinking, "But I don't have an allergic response when I eat those foods". Well here's the thing: it's east to not realize that certain foods (or meds, chemicals, cosmetics, etc.) trigger or exacerbate our symptoms. For example, when I first got "sick" with pSS two and a half years ago, I had the strangest, painful rashes on my left arm (along with terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea). I couldn't figure it out, although I thought it was triggered by food. Well, I stopped eating gluten a few times and I still had symptoms. So 8 months later I saw an acupuncturist who put me on a low-histamine diet free of gluten. It took almost a month but the rashes and diarrhea went away. The same happened last summer with dairy...so bye-bye cheese! You probably know dairy and gluten are common triggers for those of us with autoimmunity. Here's the thing: Am I allergic to dairy or gluten? No! But I am highly intolerant. The body can have the same effect with eggs and nuts. But all these foods take a while to clean out of our symptoms, which is why it's said to eliminate them for at least 30 days. I reall hope this helps and I wish you the very best!

Hi Casey, did you write a book and/or what book are you referring to? I am interested in trying to find solutions to help allievate symptoms rather than just take pain meds to cover up.

DLT88, my recommendation is to find one who trained under Dr. Andrew Weil in Arizona. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress once you find someone!
What book is being discussed here? Thanks.
Maria and Nomad, I previously referred to Spontaneous Healing by Dr. Andrew Weil and Anatomy of an Illness by Norman Cousins. Spontaneous Healing is very helpful, I found!
Thanks Casey for your detailed explanation.....
I've been lactose intolerant for years with GERD, IB and chronic reflux under my belt so I pretty much know to avoid dairy, and dairy related foods. I have high inflammation and cannot take NSAIDS so I recently introduced gluten-free into my diet and eat mega anti-inflammatory foods and avoid those causing inflammation.
potassium foods instead of taking potassium meds prescribed by my doc. That gave me hope that if it worked for the potassium it could work for inflammation and other things. But as of yet, it's not helping w/the inflammation.
My next step is to find a naturopath/nutritionist. Not too many in my area....

Maria, have you tried taking Quercetin? Jarrow makes a good one. My acupuncturist said it is basically for inflammation caused by 'auto-immune' response.
DLT88, is it a supplement? My new didn't discusss w/me how to help my inflammation. Didn't help any for SS symptoms either. Just gave me something for fibromalgia and salagen to help more with my dryness issues because the fibro med can cause dryness.

Casey, I too get a painful weird rash which itches like crazy on my inner upper arm. When it comes It'll for at least a week or may be more, then just like that it's gone sometimes for months. I have IB, lactose intolerance, GERD and reflux which are all interconnected so I know all about the painful painful cramps w/diahrea. It just n ever ends.....like the ever ready battery.

Maria, yes it's just a supplement. They have it at Amazon with some reviews from people who've used it.
