USAgurl don't understand the point you are making I clearly said Graves and hashimotos are AI but they are not the ONLY causes of hyper or hypo thyroidism iodine deficiency cause 50% of hyperthyroidism in Switezerland for example.
Or are you agreeing ? I'm confused.
As I've said before I believe that Sjogren's should be called Sjogren's disease and that there should be no attempt at calling it primary or secondary it is irrelevant, adds to patient confusion and makes no difference to any medication which should be used on a need for basis as per physical symptoms. IF ( a very big if) any one ever does any research into Sjogrens and produces a specific treatment or cure then we may need to rethink as such a treatment (other than stem cell therapy?) will be specific to the Sjogrens white blood cell and autoanti body profile and not to SLE?RA etc as Sjogrens is unique in the monocyte/lyphocyte infiltration of tissues.
I agree with you except that lack of iodine causes hypo (low thyroid hormone). Granted hypo can be caused by Graves and Hashimotos. That's all. The rest is on the same page. Got carried away since I nearly went crazy with thyroid problems for about 8 years. Have researched it extensively. Is there a thyroid disease that's not AI that can cause hyperthyroidism--not arguing, just would like to know.

Hi USAgurl sorry for the typo yes you're right about Iodine!
There are several causes of hyperthyroidism benign tumours of the thyroid (very common in ageing cats) = nodular hyperplasia thyroid in humans; pituitary malfunction; incorrect feedback between the pituitary and thyroid; carcinoma of the thyroid; thyroiditis but as you say AI (GRaves) is the most common in humans.
Aha! Thank you for posting that -- I was wondering why my old cats were getting so hyperthyroid when they got so old. Now it makes sense. I wish my vet could have explained that to me.

Pleased to help pity I can't help myself - geeling awful eyes getting drier and sorer and redder worried about blindness :(
I did start training as a vet many moons ago. I don't know why cats show high levels of this kind of tumour.
It is treatable by surgery or drugs ( a pill or two a day) our boy has had it for several years now and has coped with drug therapy. We use a drug trade name vidalta
Sorry to hear you are struggling. We seldom hear you complain, but I know that you suffer too. I hope that you can find relief for your eyes. I know that the heat will feel good this winter, but it surely adds to the eye dryness. Wish we had some better solutions to share on this!
I agree with having water with you at all times. I always carry a liter size Bobble with me and usually refill it 3-4 times a day. I take Pilocarpine 3 times a day and before being prescribed that, I refilled 6-8 times a day. Even now, I occasionally run into the store and leave my water in the car. Yeegads! I head straight for the store coolers and grab a bottle of water and I sometimes finish it before I even check out. That leads to some interesting looks from the cashiers! My dentist also sang water's praises. With the constant flow of water running through my mouth, rinsing those left over bits of food out, my teeth have stayed in much better shape than they should have.
So much of having Sjogrens is trial and error. Let's try this, let's try that, take this, don't take this, two of this one but only if you're taking four of that but eat something first, but take this on an empty stomach. And they wonder why we get depressed. I've been having a bad mouth flair for about two months and nothing has worked to help it. I bit my cheek so hard while eating tonight that it drew blood and tears simultaneously. It led to a medium size meltdown and let me tell you the expletives flew. I cussed and damned this f*****g disease to hell. I think I might have even made up a few new ones. And yes, I think it's a disease. There. I feel better now, and Gateway I hope you do too!
