Swollen glands in the throat

I'm just curious whether anyone else experiences intermittent swelling of the lymph nodes on the neck and throat.

MIne pops up out of the blue and hurts pretty good. It'll last a couple days then go away. I never related it to anything more than an oddity or maybe I was fighting something off, but nothing ever came of it.

I did call the Rheumy today and he said it is most definitely related to SS. Using Advil for now and keeping an eye on it (I like my doc, btw. The conversation was quite detailed). Oh, and he pointed out that I need to avoid sour or citrusy things like lemon. He said anything that makes the salivary glands work harder right now would irritate the issue. How interesting is that?

But….it is so strange to me and totally annoying. Had to see if anyone else deals with this. Ahh…all the little things so peculiar about this.

I deal with this all the time. Interesting your rheumy said to avoid citrus

Yes, I've also heard from other SS people that they have experienced that, too. It must kind of feel like the mumps, huh?

I have had that problem many years ago and was told to avoid eating anything acidic. As long as I keep to this I no longer have the problem.

I do get a shooting pain that starts in my neck (possibly in the area of the gland) and travels up the side of my face to about the side of my eye. Don't know if it's connected to Sjogren's.

Yes, it comes and goes like you said. Very painful though. I always get a sore throat with the swollen glands. Right now what I am experiencing the most is this funny feeling in my head, like a fullness. Head hurts, and I can feel the pressure around my eyes and the crown of my head. Wasn't sure if just a headache, but nothing takes it away. Sjogren's related? Anyone?

Sjoggies deal with so many odd things. Before I was diagnosed I had gone to my allergy/asthma guy about the swollen glands thinking it was allergy related or a respiratory infection but of course, it wasn't. And he wasn't quite sure what it was. Same with my primary. It was nice that the Rheumy knew immediately what it was and what to do about it.

And yes it is uncomfortable at best…but usually ends up pretty painful.

I have my first appt with my Rheumy on Tues and what you are talking about has been happening to me. YES it is painfull and I get the sore throat. This year my allergies are off the wall. I am wondering since I have been fighting a tremendous amount of mucous. It chokes me and sometimes makes me vomit. Are these all part of it?

For the last couple of months I have had headaches and a SORENESS that feels like my brain itself is sore. Had an MRI the other day and they found something on the left side where the soreness is. Don't know what yet. I am seeing a neurologist at noon today. I know dryness can cause problems in the brain also and can cause lesions. So we'll see...

Yes, I get the swollen nodes all the time....But I also have Fibromyalgia, and that's when it feels like I'm in a flare. But maybe it is the SS....who knows. But I get it, it lasts a few days, and goes away..

Hi EnjoyLife,

Makes sense to me! I have a sensitivity to too much citrus anyway, though this has never been mentioned to me!

My glands always feel at least a little swollen, things that are always present almost begin to be 'the norm'!

Thanks for the heads up!

Wishing you well,

SK

With regards to citrus and the over production of saliva, it may be that you have salivary gland stones lodged in your glands. When your mouth produces too much saliva by eating something citrusy, it has nowhere to go and gets partially blocked by the stones which in turn can make the glands swollen. These stones can appear and multiply when your mouth gets dehydrated a lot...a visit to your doctor and dentist would be a good starting point to rule Salivary Gland Stones which can normally be detected by a simple x-ray.
