Hair Loss

I used to have a thick head of hair. Now thanks to the generic of Plaquenil I've lost quite a bit of hair. When does the hair loss stop?

Hi, Tez,

I guess I had the idea that the Plaquenil was the cause based on the way my Rheumatologist asked questions about the side effects of the Plaquenil. He was most likely going on to what the SS was causing.

Thanks for the link.

Hi dee,

I know, I have been going through this for years, I think partly it is the autoimmune disease, and partly the meds, at least my meds, there is much written by people who take Lyrica. Whatever the reason, it sucks! No woman ever wants to lose their hair, not sure what to do! I'm open for suggestions!

Wishing you well, and wishing you long, full, flowing hair,

SK

I'll be a 'skin head' soon enough, Terri! LOL! For now, I've let it grow, the shorter it is the balder I look! I wore it in a French Twist for Christmas and my granddaughters raved about it!

It was a good day, I made it through without passing out in my mashed potatoes! ha!

Hope you are well, hang on to your hair!

Susan

Stop the presses. Did you say taking the medication Lyrica causes hair loss??? I started taking that around the time my hair loss was occurring. Thank you, thank you for letting me know.

hair loss was one of the first things i notice long before this problem. Lucky my hair is thick, but still

I started losing my thick hair around September of last year and was just puzzled. I thought maybe it just need a rest so I took to protective styles like sew in weaves. Even with little stress on my hair I still had severe breakage even bald spots. It was just about two weeks ago I found out that hair loss is one of the effects that comes along with SS. I love wigs and weaves so it's not too much of a problem but is hair loss lifelong/ ongoing even after/during treatment?

This post was started by me, and you asked a very good question. I'd like to know the answer, too. Wearing a wig would not be an option for me if the hair loss continues. I hate wearing a wig!!

Does anyone have an answer to Kthoma33's question?

I'm having massive hair loss myself. It started about a year ago. Plus I'm losing my finger nails also. Is anyone else having problems with their finger nails??

Thank you for the link. But my nails are lifting off the nail beds. Yes, they are brittle though. I used to have acrylic nails, but had to take them off due to the lifting. :( This only started happening about 3 months ago. But, like so many others I have read about, I think I've had Sjogrens for most of my life. It's just now showing it's ugly head with many symptoms and in the blood work.

The hair loss is so bad, I can run my hand through my hair and come out with a clump of hair. My hair is long, down to the middle of my back, and cutting it short is very heart breaking to me. Plus with my nails now, I am feeling a huge loss over both.

I'm relieved that I have a diagnosis (although my general practitioner feels it's secondary Sjogrens). I am awaiting a referral to a Rheumatologist, which can take a month, sometimes more to go through my insurance. I'm a bit impatient to see the Rheumatologist, as my GP will not start me on any medicine. They feel that the Rheumy would be better one to give me meds, and I'm inclined to agree. I just want the nails and hair loss to stop. I've lived with the fatigue and pain all my life. I'm almost used to the pain and fatigue, but not the hair and nails. We are all vain about something, and for me it was my hair and nails. :(

Thanks again,

Fascina

Thank you Terri, I've heard about Raynauds before. Not sure if I have it though. I'll let the Rheumy do all the tests he wants to, in finding out what's going on.

I'll keep you posted when I know more.

Hugs, Fascina

My hair was thinnning and my first Rheumy said it was not the SS…I knew better. He Dx’d Plaquenil and my hair thinned even more. I stopped after a yr and a half and my hair started thickening up a bit. I loved it. Now because my joints and fatigue are worse I just started the Plaquenil again…:frowning:

I found information of people saying that Plaquenil causes hair loss. All I know is that I want my hair back.

Good luck your meds. I know it's hard.

I saw my rheumatologist yesterday, and he said the hair loss could be from taking Plaquenil. But he said it could be from getting older. Well, the hair loss started happening about six months after I began taking the Plaquenil and over a few months I lost 40% of my hair. So it is my opinion that the hair loss cause wasn't old age but the Plaquenil.

I’ve lost about 75% of my hair, and my docs think its due to the Sjorgens. I’m not on Plaquenil, and I’m only 45.
