The Benefits of Having a Hobby

By Veronica Scott

Some people look at a hobby as a waste of time. They might think a hobby has no purpose or it's simply something to do to pass the time. For hobbyists, a hobby is much more than just a pastime. A hobby has many benefits and advantages for each individual. For some, a hobby is an emotional outlet, for others a way of gaining knowledge. Hobbies keep our minds - and our hands - active. Whatever your reasons are, if you've been thinking about starting a hobby or getting a new one, consider the following advantages to help guide your decision.

Time for Ourselves

One of the biggest advantages of a hobby is it allows for quiet time. People tend to think more clearly when enjoying their favorite hobby, without the distractions of the outside worldto bother them. The mind wanders and hobbyists often come up with some of their best ideas while enjoying their favorite time-passing activity.

Reveals a Talent or Passion

Hobbyists often find a talent or passion they may not have known they had before. Some people have sat down at the piano to learn how to play, only to find out they've always had a hidden talent for playing it anyway. Others might find they have a niche for or some other craft after only one attempt. But the only way you'll ever discover this hidden talent is to try. The first step is to find something that you're interested in. From there, you might find that you're better at it than you ever could have guessed.

Use a Hobby as a Networking Tool

The only time you should list your hobby on a or is when your hobbies pertain to the type that you are applying for. On the other hand, mentioning a hobby during a job interview might be an endearing quality the potential employer will remember. Mentioning your hobby in an interview can also be a great conversation starter and reflect a small part of your individual personality. Hobbies have a way of implying you enjoy working with others because most hobbies are not individual activities. You'll find hundreds of message boards, forums and clubs that are specifically designated for many particular hobbies.

Hobbies Offer a Time of Relaxation

Most hobbies are an ideal way to relax. Coming home from work and sitting down to enjoy your favorite pastime helps to take your mind off of the stresses of the day. Hobbies also help you unwind before bed so you can get a better night's sleep.

With all of the benefits that a hobby can provide, it's no wonder why the hobby store industry is such a successful market. There are literally hundreds of hobbies to choose from and the only limits a person has are the ones they place on themselves. The ideal hobby for each individual is one that involves something he or she enjoys and would love to do on a regular basis.

Though I am not an exceptionally talented or graced with one all consuming passion, I feel that pasttimes are essential to our well being as we need time away from being sick! That's a tall order with chronic disease, especially autoimmune, as it seems as though we can never have just one!

I suppose one of my genuine and lasting interests is decorating, and to decorate, you have to shop! I love to shop for all types of textiles, prints, paintings, my Mom and I are hand painted porcelain fans, I love furniture and furnishings, and I like antiques and antiquities. I am just as thrilled to go to flea markets and junk shops as I am to go to Nordstroms!

I have 2 sewing machines that always seem to need to be adjusted and coaxed, and I do simplistic things like curtains, pillowcases, runners, however, before you ask, I DO NOT DO ALTERATIONS!

I can also do serious damage to our finances at the garden center, I love all types of flowers, flowering shrubs, trees...though it is getting more and more difficult to bend to plant, weed, and to dig here requires exceptional strength as the land is clay, sandstone and limestone, so we have decidedly reached our limit on yard plantings.

I have always loved Halloween, as I enjoy creating the costume and make-up, and though I am not professionally trained, when I am feeling good, I like to do hair as well, my Dad was a barber, so I have a little training! One of my long time girlfriends and co-workers always told me I would be great to have backstage in a theatre!

Before my hands started to limit me, I would love to wrap gifts, and make lavish bows and trimmings! That has been limited as well as when there are gifts to give, there are loved ones to have down, and much cooking and cleaning done before hand. I have faltered in those areas too, but I excelled in the past. I have to keep reminding myself that it's only natural for our abilities to decline with age, but they are things I still love to do!

So, I have the group off to a good start, please tell me what your interests are!

Wishing you all well,

SK

Hi SK!

I like your comment entry. Yes, shopping and browsing catalogs, and surfing the internet occupies your mind and puts the

SS focus on the back burner. Also, I have reently discovered pinterest to see what everyone is doing. There are some

clever, creative people in this world!! I taught elem school for 35 years and that was my hobby! I was always thinking

of new ideas for my students. Now I guess my main pasttime is self improvement, nutrition, and yoga. I have become

addicted to TV. With The Chew, The Talk, Dr. OZ, Steve Harvey, Ellen, Rachael my afternoons are programmed. I barely

have time for my hour walk .

This is a gleamse of my interests. Hope this is helpful.

Hi kitlover!

First of all, I would like to give praise and show respect for your years of teaching. All teachers are heroes in my book, but elementary school teachers are the most special of all, as they nurture the little ones.

I’m always amazed to see the great projects the kids so proudly bring home!

I’ve seen a glimpse if Pinterest, and it seems to be something I would enjoy. I spend a great deal of time with my grand kids and am always looking for new ideas and projects.

I never had a great deal of time for TV, but I certainly do enjoy it now. Movies, documentaries, HGTV and the history channel are my favorites. I’ve also enjoyed some of the HBO and Showtime series.

I think my next day with the little ones will involve a tea party. I have several sets of miniature hand painted porcelain tea sets. I make the tiny sandwiches, cookies and cakes, use embroidered table clothes and napkins, and we have a ball! Of course by the end everything is a mess, but it’s a happy mess!
