I wanted to share my experience with Autologous Eye Drops prescribed by my ophthalmologist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Although I have have severe dry and burning eyes for almost two years, I was just officially diagnosed with Sjogren's in March. I had been on Lotemax, Restasis, and Refresh Optive Advanced artificial tears but was still in a lot of pain.
When I finally received the diagnosis, he explained there was another option- autologous drops. They are made by putting your own blood into a centrifuge and separating the serum. This serum is then mixed with saline and put into eye drop form. The drops stay frozen until ready to use and then must be refrigerated. I'm not sure how they work except that they have healing properties for the cornea. I do know that they have changed my life! My eyes feel 100% better than they did just a couple of months ago.
Right now insurance does not cover the drops- the technology is too new. But at $360 for a ~6 month supply I considered them a bargain! Well worth it for improving my quality of life:)
Really pleased that they're working so well for you! There have been a few discussions about this before, but it seems like not many people have been able to get them- hopefully they'll become more widely available in the future. Thanks for sharing your news!
That's really good to hear. I had tried a different type of eye drop that was from a custom pharmacy. When I dropped a bottle and spilled half I was ready to cry.
Did you appeal to your insurance company with a letter from your doctor? It may be worth a try.
Yes, I do hope they become more available. I would definitely travel to get them but am lucky they are in my state. I also love the fact that they are not a drug!:)

I hear you- it would be like spilling liquid gold! I could try an appeal...for now just took the dr. office's word that they would not be covered.
