Ive had acid reflux for close to ten years I take Axid max dose 2x a day PPI’s like Prilosac gives me migraines. What a luck out, cause ten years ago they weren’t talking about PPIs possibly cOntributing to osteoporosis as they are now. HOWEVER, recently I’m having bad bouts of acid reflex even on my med.
I feel like since the SS dx it’s been much worse. It can get very bad when I’m on an antibiotic, as I am now (again!)
I take a digestive enzyme before meals, a probiotic at night and a Prelief capsule before coffee (I have two 1/2 cups per day. Any less than this gives me migraines.
I’m getting worried about my stomach. Don’t have a lot of faith in my gastro doc or rheumie. Anyone doing anything extra for GERD? My dad died two years ago… Lymphoma of the stomach.
I take Protonix once a day for my G.E.R.D. I stopped smoking 10 months ago, which greatly reduced it, but I still have it. Nothing else that I can do for it. That I know of. I wish I could get rid of it. I wish you well in finding relief.
I Worry about my gerd as well MD took me off of prilosec because she said it was robbing my body of nutrients. She did not prescribe a replacement. My current primary told me he would rather supplement the losses and put me back on it. It makes me very hungry and it caused me a weight gain I don't need. Before the symptoms of SS started I had extreme mucous problems especially at night. My Guafenesin the major ingredient in Mucinex is helping with the mucous however sometimes I may be hungry, but as soon as I eat I have to vomit and it also happens when I cough. I take the prilosec only occasionally but I also worry because my sister died 3 years ago from a rare gastric cancer. Any Ideas or suggestions would be welcome since my MDs are at odds over TX. Nomad I recently purchased MAGNESIUM oil from Swanson because mine gets depleted and I have FM. Besides using it for FM pain it is also reccomended for migraines.
Im sorry about your sister I’ll look for the Mag oil. It is relatively common for people to go from a PPI to an H2Blocker like Axid. Axid is not considered as problematic as the PPI’s (Prilosec). I’m finding drinking a little extra water helpful. For some reason, I go through periods of time where everything seems to come on me at once.
Only thing that has ever helped me
SK, thank you. How do you take this? Before meals, erc?
Nomad, you can take it either way even both. If I am going to push my luck with something I know is difficult to digest, I'll take it before, and see if I still need it afterward.
This was recommended to me by my Chiropractor, and how he explained it's benefits was that as we age, or if we have digestion problems, it is usually due to LACK of digestive enzymes/acids. The meds actually REMOVE those necessary enzymes rather than boost them.
I suggest you start out breaking one in half, and remember this stimulates digestion, don't want to over due it or there could be 'accidents'. I also take probiotics that also stimulate digestion, so with this, sometimes less is best until you are better acquainted with the supplement.
They are plant based, and all natural.
I take protonix, it has helped, I have not had any problems while on it. Been taking it for years now, haven’t even experience side effects. Hope this helps.
For me, I found that deleting wheat/gluten from my diet got rid of 95% of my GERD, and cutting back on meat, large meals in the PM, and soda pops or too many milk products does the rest. I know those of us with SS have gastropareisis (slow emptying tummy), and of course, that happens to most people as we age. On top of that, of course, with SS, is the lack of digestive enzymes (by the way, which enzymes do you use? I need to take them). AND, perimenopause and menopause also mess with digestion, slowing things down. Goodness, it is no wonder we have problems!!. I suspect that the solution is going to involve changing habits, if you have not already. Eating smaller meals, eating your bigger meal in the middle of the day, cutting back on the hard to digest foods, blah, blah, blah...all the things I certainly hate to hear. While SS has something to do with what is going on, time was bound to get us, anyway. Doesn't that sort of stink?
My problem with taking this medication is that I have FM and already have a low B12 level that I replace with sublingual meds. This med prevents the body from assilmilating this vitamin. It also makes the bones brittle.

Yes that is a biggie with me and I know that I can't have wheat and that gluten free, dairy free, works the best for me. I can't always stick to it but it is so problematic that I may have to really get serious with avoiding these things completely. I noticed that people have suggested the use of pre and pro biotics and i would like to know which ones work the best for us and are inexpensive? Thanks Bookgeek!

I need to learn about the pre and pro biotics, too. My sister keeps suggesting great ones, but they are so expensive.

I will try the Protonix...I am still figuring this site out, so I missed this suggestion, earlier.

How terribly sad about your sister, Anna. I am so sorry. I have never heard of oil of Magnesium. Ever! I will have to check out that, too.
