Finding an oral surgeon

Hi, I have not asked a question in a while so hope I’m doing this right. My problem at this time is I have, like most of you, terrible dental problems. I have a broken severly infected tooth which is very painful. I have been referred by two dentists to go to see an oral surgeon but there are none in my area who take my insurance. I’m sure someone out there has run into this. Please tell me what you did to resolve this dilemma. Thank you.

Try calling your insurance they should have a list of providers that take your insurance close to you or may pay a partial price to one in your area if they do not have one close to you

I have called my insurance co. The list that they gave me of participating providers, when I called them they say they no longer take my insurance. My throat neck and upper chest area are now very sore when I even take a deep breath. I don’t know if an infected tooth can do this or not. I am truly at a loss as to what to do next.

The ER is always an option you could have more infection. Call the insurance back and tell them their list is out of date and you need to see an oral surgeon. Is their a teaching hospital close to you? Some have dental schools and can help. I used to have a number for dentist help let me see if I can find it in my reference material.

Definitely sounds like a trip to the ER. Your medical insurance will cover that and in the meantime still call your dental coverage insurance to get an updated list for an oral surgeon. At the very least the ER will be able to give you an antibiotic because it sounds a lot like you have an infection that is spreading. You do not want to let the infection go any longer because they can have some severe consequences if you continue to let it go. What area/ state do you live in? Maybe someone else in your same area that is in the group can give you some insight on an oral surgeon you can see. Again I cannot stress enough that this truly sounds like a bad infection that you cannot wait to get checked by going back and forth with your dental insurance company. One other suggestion I have for you is to check with your medical insurance coverage company as they may pay for the oral surgeon; they do here in our state (at least with my medical insurance). Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.

Thank you both for your help. I did go to an urgent care facility last week and was given an antibiotic and was told to see a surgeon. The tooth itself felt better in about three days but now it’s coming back with a vengeance. I live in md. close to pa. There is a teaching hospital in balt about two hours away but their waiting list is weeks long. If I do go to a hospital they will as you said give me an antibiotic but I can’t see them doing much more than that and telling me again to see an oral surgeon.

I still suggest making a call on Monday to your medical insurance company and ask them if they would cover you because you have to see an oral surgeon. If they do you should be able to go to the ones near you. Not sure what dental and or medical coverage you have but if you have online access to doctors on your plan you may be able to find one closer. Good luck, keep us posted and I hope you feel better soon.....I feel your pain....literally....I have a broken tooth that will be removed on the 12th of Nov in addition to some other work. Nothing worse than tooth pain. Oh, one other thing, I have noticed when I chew more it aggravates it greatly.....try to stick to softer foods until you get it fixed.

Please remember that dental infections can be dangerous in that they can spread and become severe very quickly. The antibiotics may have pushed it back a little but as I'm sure you are noticing, you have to treat the cause of the issue. The others are right in that you have to be very proactive in finding someone soon.

Thank you all for your thoughts on my tooth problem. I am going to get on the phone Monday morning with my insurance company and if I get no solution from them, I will have no choice but to go to the er. There is a hospital a little more than an hour away who I’ve been told has an oral surgeon on call. Thanks again
