So I have not been diagnosed with any lung diease and have searched the archives to see if anyone said something. I apologize if I missed it. I wake up each morning as if I have a large wad of phlegm in my throat. I use a nasal iggigator and that does help but I am constantly clearing my throat and trying to spit up the stuff that seems caught in here. I understand it is probably a salvia issue but has anyone done anything about it that might help? Thanks
I do have lung issues---a cough that goes on for months after even a 2 day cold and brings up a lot of mucus. My pulmonologist thinks that due to Sjogren's my lungs are dry and produce mucus to counteract the dryness. Perhaps this is also true for you, especially since in the morning when you first wake up you haven't been constantly clearing your throat of mucus as you might during the day. The other possibility might be a post nasal drip, again accumulating overnight. So far no one has suggested a remedy for this which works, although I will try Exovac next. Jaycee
I get that way when I am going to bed. Can't clear my throat. At that time, I put Vicks on my throat and it helps. In the morning, though, the congestion is down in my lungs. I can't really cough it up until I get in the shower and the hot water hits my chest. Then it becomes productive and my lungs get rid of it. Maybe a hot shower on your throat area would help to get things thinned and moving in there?
Hello, I have the same problem and it has been going on for 2 years now. I am sure it is due to the disease but I talked to my doctor, she assured me it is due to the syndrome. My rhumatologist said there is nothing we can do about it, the mucus has been sitting on my lung all night I have to cough it out in the morning. I have less mucus when I take oregano oil (3 soft gel) or when I rub Vicks on my chest and back before going to bed.
)I have phlegm which is worse when I first wake in a morning though it is also there at other times though not as bad.
I have a problem when out walking for a while and also climbing stairs. The severity varies considerably.
I had a lung function test and the results were good for my age (79) so I was sent for a scan. That showed I have very mild bronchiectasis but it is so mild it would not cause the problems I have.
And that was it. They don't know what causes these symptoms so nothing can be done about it. Just go away and live with it.
I use Olbas oil when I go to bed which seems to help.
OMG! This is exactly what I have constantly. I go through a box of tissues every two days. This phlegm is always there, sometimes I cough to where I begin to choke. My voice is always raspy. How do I have this extremely dry mouth, yet all of this phlegm. I just know this contributes to the acid reflux.
This cannot be a coincidence with all of us.
My pulmonologist says that because te lungs are dry they produce mucus, just like our dry eyes produce tears. During the day we often are clearing our throats but at night it accumulates and we cough. I cough during the day as well. Jaycee

Having a good humidifier running all night is somewhat helpful. Air conditioning is drying to the lungs so may increase the production of mucus. Jaycee

I had sinus surgery three times before my Sjogren’s diagnosis. I was tested for allergies last year due to this chronic “pressure” issue.
I finally figured out that it must also be Sjogren’s related. My rheumatologist says that the sinus issue is most likely due to the mucus in my sinuses being very thick (which makes it phlegmy.) It is nearly impossible to blow it out. When it’s really irritated, I also wake up with that wad in the throat feeling. It’s where the sinuses and/or nose drain. It’s very thick and difficult to get to come up or go down.
Nasal / sinus irrigation seems to help somewhat. Steam is a FANTASTIC help. My hair looks like Medusa, but who cares?
Even if I don’t have time for a full shower, I can run hot water in the sink and lean over to inhale the steam. Boiling water works even better since it produces more steam.
I often wet a washcloth, hold it over my nose and mouth, and breathe through it until it cools down. Rinse, lather, repeat for as long as you have time for.
I’m going to ask about the exovac. Anything that consumes less time and energy is a plus in my book.
