Science Confirms Turmeric As Effective As 14 Drugs

Hi my SS family,

I came across this interesting article today . Considering how strong a track record turmeric (curcumin) has, having been used as both food and medicine in a wide range of cultures, for thousands of years, a strong argument can be made for using curcumin as a drug alternative or adjuvant in cancer treatment.

If it does have anti-platelet and prostacyclin modulating effects, compares favorably to steroids, effective alternative to anti inflammatories (please read article for rest).Could this help Sjorgens in anyway? Anything worth a try ;)

Wishing all SS-ers a 'comfortable' night

God bless

Does anyone have an idea of how much is needed as far as the culinary end to make this useful. I've heard it before and have no doubt its true. Just don't know how to actually go about it.

Some of these sound pretty good to me, EnjoyLife!

Yummy!!! Thanks SK

Let me know if you find any favorites!

you got it….the very first one that popped up (spinach and beans) sounded great. I think that'll be the one I try out first

Hi Guys,

This is exciting. Here is some evidence based research you can follow up and read.

RE: ingestion

You can take 'tumeric' as a powder or buy fresh - it looks like fresh ginger. Supplements as always -tablets, capsules, powder . You can have tumeric tea, facemasks ..... list is endless but we automatically do think of food when we say turmeric

This link offers great site for research, tips etc.. if you wish to become more informed:

To summarise everything so you can get started lol!

-Turmeric - we mean 'curcumin' ,tumeric , per se, is not pure 'curcumin'

- Dosage needed - they suggest around or exceeding 1 gram per day. Pretty difficult to reach such levels just using the turmeric in your food as thats equivalent roughly to 1600mg twice a day with meals .

-Take an extract that contains significant amounts of 'curcumin' Most spices only contain 2%.

Quick tips:

-Curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, so consume black pepper with it, which contains 'piperine'… a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2000% .I am now swallowing a few small whole peppercorns along with my curcumin supplement, in order to enhance absorption ;).

- Curcumin is also fat soluble, so good idea to take it with a fatty meal. You all have excuses to go fry those chips and make yummy burgers ;). In the UK just hit the 'fish, chips and mushy peas ' !

Anyone interested can trial tumeric. Lets all see how we are in one month. Every little 'tool' helps!. Ill make a note to revisit post.

PS: dont forget tumeric stains hands, clothes yellow - so be warned ;)

Love it!

God bless

Hi everybody,

I am a chemical engineer from turkey, doing lots of googling and new to the site.

My 57year old mom has the SS, newly diagnosed, type not clear yet, but our nondiagnosed and nonapproved family history makes me believe that she will have schleroderma and some romatoid factor in company.

I am checking posts recently and will summarise a brief of my investigations soon.

Thanks for this very helpful post and I also wanted to share my comments Regarding the current post about turmenic,

I checked the links in detail and also the comments on other links. I also see that turmenic is a strong dietary with beneficial effects, however I also noticed from the posts that high dose extracts of turmenic can have effects like iron chelation at people with anemia that SS mostly accompany with.

Any comments on this side?

If only the problem with SS was inflammation it could be cured with a couple of Advil (far more effective than tumeric,) tumeric, Frenches Mustard on hot dogs etc. But Sadly SS is a disorder of the exocrine system and tumeric, curcumin, ginger etc etc. won't do crap for that. In fact if all we had to do was treat Inflammation we could treat if not cure dozens of diseases. Do people with minor disease exhibiting results of inflammation (which can be quite severe pain wise) get some relief? Of course. Does it help disease? Not one bit.

Go back and read the non peer reviewed "studies". Not one of them deals with anything but a few symptoms. And not one of them would pass muster as a legitimate study.

I don't think there is anything crueler than this kind of crap offering "simple natural solutions" to serious problems................. These people would be better off selling bagged manure in a Wal-mart parking lot, at least it would help produce some tasty veggies.

And Hasan you dead on large amounts of curcumin can have very bad effect on a number of Auto-immune disorders. SS is one of them. In fact depending where the progression of disease is, it can kill you. No "natural" substance SHOULD ever be taken in excess of normal dietary amounts. Including beer. Bad things happen.

In an ongoing Phase II clinical trial (NCT00094445), participants are receiving 8 g of curcumin by mouth every day for several 8-week-periods. The plasma concentrations of curcumin in people taking relatively high oral doses of curcumin are very low, typically in the nanomolar range. This means that the oral administration of curcumin can't possibly be absorbed in concentrations high enough to have anything but a placebo effect. of course this is a well known fact so now they are selling black pepper extract to overcome that issue.

I find it fascinating, we didn't need black pepper extract until it was proven tumeric couldn't be absorbrd by the blood in anything but VERY trace amounts, but it was "effective" before then, why suddenly the interest in black pepper extract?

Its smoke and mirrors. Read some real science http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.24967/pdf

Note particularly the extensive bibliography.

Thank you, tj1 and Hasan. I often worry when I hear people talk of taking large amounts of a “harmless” “natural” “cure.” The manufacturers of natural remedies often neglect to explain the possible dangerous side effects. Instead, they skirt the issue by putting disclaimers like this one:
“Disclaimer
This product has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to treat or prevent disease.
The information provided here is for educational purposes only, and should not be used to diagnose and treat diseases. If you have a serious health problem, we recommend that you consult a competent health practitioner.

Finally, we wish to caution you that the information on this web site is for educational purposes only. Always consult with a qualified health practitioner before deciding on any course of treatment, especially for serious or life-threatening illnesses.”

They do this knowing full well that people will not check with their doctors because they assume that something “natural” isn’t harmful.

That being said, I know that Mads was attempting to help find some easy relief for those in this SS family.

I appreciate the sentiment. I just wish dangerous info came with bigger labels so that those of us looking for answers can easily see when there is a risk.

My husband and I are trying it. I also read that it is best to take black pepper with Tumeric. Some supplements even have Pepper already included!

Shira

I hadn't seen all those messages above. Sorry, Shira

My eye Dr. suggested Tumeric and my Rhuemotologist told me to steer clear of it......she did tell me why but I can't remember lol

I have to be careful of things like that because they can thin the blood. if you are on other meds with the same effect it could become a problem.
