Here I go again....Another new question. I went to the ENT last week and he wanted me on Nystatin swish and gargle and spit therapy. Has a lovely description!
He said there would be no side effects. Not true! My stomach is killing me with bloating and burning pain.
Have any of you had a problem like this? I know that if stopped suddenly it will make the thrush worse. It will be Monday until I can complain to him.
Ye gods, if anything has a remote side effect it seems to strike me. Nothing like being allergic or sensitive to any drug on the market.
I have exactly the same reaction to it. I haven’t found anything helpful for my stomach and can no longer use the nystatin.
Sorry that i have no tips to help with your stomach problems
Nystatin is not the only cure for thrush. There is a pill called Diflucan that is a systemic treatment for all fungal infections. Ask your doctor for that instead.
I use Fluconazole pills once a week and Nystatin gargle only when I have an ACTIVE case of thrush. When I have an active case of thrush I also take a Fluconazole pill once a day with the Nystatin gargle. I get that nasty stuff out of my mouth as soon as possible and go to great lengths to not swallow that witch’s brew because I have nausea and vomiting from my TN anyway. I also found out that not all thrush in the mouth of Sjogrens sufferers is white.
Thanks for all of your replies. I am going to keep trying today and take Mylanta a few times a day and see if this helps. TL you are right about getting the nasty stuff out of the mouth as soon as possible. Waiting five minutes after the "treatment" and then rinsing seems to help. If this method is not successful I will just stop using it as SK suggested.
There is sugar in the potion they gave me. So brush, brush, brush. Do these doctors really know what they are doing?
It is such a beautiful day that I am going to try to get out and divert my mind from all this stress. Sneezing or not. Allergies season is in full swing in the Hudson Valley.
yes...funny that they give a mouthwash with sugar in it when thrush is a fungus that feeds on sugars....go figure...and yes thrush can be brown, white or yellow
That is part of the reason compounding pharmacies are so wonderful. Good chance your doc could have made the same mouthwash without sugar. Probably would taste bad and may not be covered by insurance but, in certain cases these special formulas are vital.
I hear you gals about allergy season, I'm in MD, about 70 or 80 miles west of DC and have really been coughing, choking and blowing my nose. I attribute it to cutting and bailing hay, but who knows for sure! Even the grand kids are suffering, so it's not just me!

Hopewell! A fellow NY'er? I am down on the Island and same issue here….the odd spring and summer is giving us a never ending allergy season.
I had the Nystatin once and only once...it left my mouth burning so very badly that I've never again gone near it.fortunately the oral candidiasis has not returned to the point at which I need to treat it...it usually passes within a day or two....but I would love to know what probiotic that controls yeast......
Just rebembered… Was taking a refrigerated Acidophilus tablet every time I took an antibiotic. I fogot last time and am suffering. Thrush (oral) sounds even worse
Those are great suggestions regarding using the yogurt in different ways. I too have lot's of issues with all medications. I am allergic to all antibiotics and the one's that I can handle have to be taken with an antihistamine and a steroid. That's what scares me the most regarding the future.
I have read that oil pulling helps to get rid of the yeast in the mouth. Who knows if this it true.
I make my own soy Greek yogurt. Yogurts from milk cause inflammation and Lord knows we don't need that. Soy is the only vegan yogurt and it's ridiculously easy to make (well it is for me because I have a dehydrator --I just throw the jars of soy milk mixed with a tablespoon or two of "starter" (the yogurt left over from the last batch), I put the jars in the dehydrator and set it at 110 and in the next morning: Whoala! yogurt! If you want greek, put it in a fabric bag (like a sprout bag) and hang it over the sink...let it drip all day and then the remainder is Greek yogurt.
I would think that oil pulling with coconut oil would help with this. I started oil pulling over a year and a half ago because of dry mouth sores. As long as I do it at least twice a day, I have little soreness.
